Buxton: Gateway to the Peak District

Buxton is often called the "Gateway to the Peak District", and for good reason. At around 300 metres above sea level, it is the highest market town in England and offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

History and Heritage

Buxton's history began with the Romans, who settled here around 78 AD and called it Aquae Arnemetiae because of its natural hot springs. However, the town really flourished in the 18th century. The 5th Duke of Devonshire aimed to create a northern rival to Bath and commissioned grand Georgian architecture that still defines the town's skyline today.

Town Description

Walking through Buxton feels like stepping into a Regency novel. It is elegant, airy and perfect for a sightseeing tour. The town centre is dominated by The Crescent, a stunning Grade I listed building that has recently been restored to its former glory as a luxury spa hotel.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon in the Pavilion Gardens or a staycation that feels like another world, Buxton offers a refined charm. You’ll find plenty of accommodation options, from cosy B&Bs to grand historic hotels.

Typical foods

You can’t visit this part of Derbyshire without indulging in the local flavours.

Bakewell Pudding: The original pudding from nearby Bakewell, often mistaken for a tart, is a crispy pastry base with a layer of jam and a rich almond cream filling.

Derbyshire Oatcakes: These are tasty, pancake-like cakes made from oat groats, usually served fried with bacon and cheese.

Buxton Water: It would be a crime not to try the famous mineral water. You can even bring a bottle and fill it up for free at St Ann's Well in the town centre.

Hartington Stilton: Local blue cheeses from the surrounding dairies are a staple of any afternoon tea.

Activities and nature

Buxton is an adventurer's playground, situated right on the edge of the Peak District National Park.
